
The original production of West Side Story opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York on September 26, 1957 and transferred to the Broadway Theatre before closing on June 27, 1959. It returned for 8 months in 1960, and has been revived two more times in New York, in 1964 and 1980. The original production was nominated for 6 Tony Awards, and won 2, for Best Scenic Design and Best Choreography. It lost the Best Musical award to The Music Man.
Much of the original cast opened the show in London in 1958, and a national tour followed in 1959. Since then, the show has been performed countless times worldwide and in regional productions. For a list of upcoming productions, visit the Music Theatre International site.
