Original Broadway Cast. I had this recording before I ever saw the movie version, and perhaps because of that, it’s still my favourite. Carol Lawrence has a lovely, delicate voice, which contrasts nicely with Larry Kert’s more agressive performance. I also adore Chita Rivera’s “America”. The latest release of the CD includes over 20 minutes of “symphonic dances” that are great for anyone who’s a big fan of the music. |

Original Movie Soundtrack. Although I do ever-so-slightly prefer the Broadway recording, this one is also wonderful. The re-orchestrations for the movie version provide a fuller sound. The recording features the voices of Jim Bryant and Marni Nixon as Tony and Maria, and they both perform very nicely, though in my opinion, not quite to the standard of the Broadway cast. I prefer the set-up of “America” in the film. And there is much more of the dance music on this one. So really, I would recommend getting both! |
