No Matter What – Whistle Down the Wind

Concept recording. I’m just not a huge fan of these types of recordings – not only do you get very little inkling what the story is, but the songs are often recorded in a style completely different from how they are presented on stage. So I’m pretty much predisposed to not enjoy it that much. There are definitely some decent tracks – probably the ones I enjoy most are “No Matter What”, “Unsettled Scores”, and the title track (by Lottie Mayor). Still, I’d only really recommend it if you’re a big fan of the show or of any of the artists appearing on the CD.
Original London Cast. I’ve owned this CD for years and have probably only listened to it in its entirety about 5 times. It’s a double CD, and there is a lot of the book included, which usually I really enjoy, but in this case I find it all a little boring. The music definitely has some nice moments, and the orchestrations are very good. The cast is also very good, although some of the accents are not quite right. The drawback to this one is just the story, which, even with all the dialogue included, seems to be struggling for a point to it all. Still, if you want to own a recording for the show, I would say this is the one to get.
