Don’t Be the Bunny – Urinetown

Henry Miller Theatre
Urinetown at the Henry Miller
It’s a pretty wacky idea for a show, with a terrible title. And yet, Urinetown keeps winning people over. Its road to Broadway has been close to miraculous.

Urinetown debuted in the summer of 1999 at the New York International Fringe Festival. A hit there, the show opened off-Broadway in May 2001, and made the move to Broadway in September of 2001, to the Henry Miller Theatre. It won three Tony Awards in 2002, for Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction. This production closed on January 18, 2004.

A national tour was seen throughout the U.S. in 2003 and 2004. A Canadian production premiered at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto on May 27, 2004, closing in August of that year after being extended from its original run. The European premiere was a German version of “Pinkelstadt”, which opened October 7, 2004 at the Schlossparktheater in Berlin and closed on March 31, 2005.
