Original Off-Broadway Cast. I didn’t have any idea what the music was like when I went to see this show, but I figured since it was Jonathan Larson, I would probably enjoy it. Turns out that was true, and the same goes for this cast recording. If you love Rent, you will enjoy this CD, and even if you’re not a Rent fan, there is a lot here to like. The cast first of all is fantastic…Raúl Esparza especially is absolutely perfect. There are a wide variety of musical styles – my favourite songs would probably be the high-energy “30/90” that opens the show, the hysterical Sondheimish “Sunday”, and the beautifully haunting “Why”. The whole thing has an energy that is typical of Larson’s music, and makes it all the more fun to listen to. |
