When I heard that Joey McIntyre was doing a show in New York, I knew I would go no matter what the show, but when it turned out it was this show, it got even better.
I didn’t know a lot about the show going in, other than that it was about Jonathan Larson’s life. I love Rent, especially the music, so I figured that I would enjoy the music for this show as well. I went with BarbaraAnne, and we got rush seats in the front row, and the theatre is such a small, intimate space in the first place that you really felt you were a part of it.
As Jonathan, Joe was on stage for practically the entire show, and he demonstrated a range of acting that was well beyond my expectations. I knew he could sing, but his stage presence and natural expression were a very pleasant surprise. Natascia Diaz and Jerry Dixon were both fantastic as well, especially as some of the minor characters they both played.
My favourite scene would have to be “Sunday”, which was so witty and well-done, especially with the lighting and everything. All in all though, the show just flew by, and I wish I’d made more notes immediately after, as a lot of it is pretty blurry in my memory now. I would definitely be interested in seeing it another time though, especially with a similarly strong cast.
