After the release of an album that was a huge hit in the US, Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway on October 12, 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, and was nominated for 5 Tony Awards. It opened in London on August 9, 1972, and by 1980 had become the longest-running West End musical. In the fall of 1996 it reopened at the Lyceum Theatre in London, and toured the U.K. in 1998 and 1999. The show was in Dublin in August 1999 and opened at the Colosseum Theatre in Essen, Germany in January 2000, where it played for six months. Broadway saw the return of Jesus Christ Superstar on April 16, 2000 at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts where it closed September 3rd and was nominated for the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. It still holds the record for fifth longest-running show in London. The show has been staged in 15 countries (but was banned in South Africa!). Most recently, there was a UK tour in 2001, and a US tour began in October of 2002 and is currently playing in venues across the country. |
