With One Look – Sunset Boulevard

This show has had rather a strange history, it seems to me. Despite very good advance sales, and plenty of awards, it didn’t run for long. I suppose that might be because of the cost of running it. Also, it seems to need a star name in the role of Norma to make anyone go! At any rate…

It opened in London at the Adelphi Theatre on July 12, 1993, closing on April 5, 1997. The American premiere took place on December 9, 1993 in Los Angeles, later opening on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre on November 17, 1994 where it closed on March 22, 1997. The Toronto production opened at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts on October 15, 1995 and closed in August of 1996. There was a tour in 1996 & 1997, and another smaller tour version in 1998 – 2000. A UK Tour that wrapped up in Manchester on September 28, 2002 had performed for more than a year. The show has also played in Australia and Germany.

It won 7 Tony Awards, for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting, Best Featured Actor (George Hearn), and Best Actress (Glenn Close).
