Original London Cast. This was the first one I heard, and it’s probably the one I still listen to the most. I *really* like Kevin Anderson as Joe, and I enjoy Patti LuPone as Norma, though I know some people don’t like her. I like the original version of Let’s Have Lunch, and the reprise (I’m not a huge fan of “Every Movie’s a Circus”). It’s also almost complete, and I was definitely able to get a good idea of the story just from listening to it. |

Original Broadway Cast. I spent $50 on this recording, and have only ever listened to it all the way through once. Glenn Close does nothing for me as Norma. I know some people do like her, but I much preferred Patti, who is a far superior singer. Perhaps I would have enjoyed Ms. Close more on stage, but I do not like listening to her. Alan Campbell is okay, but again, I prefer Kevin Anderson. Good things about it are Judy Kuhn as Betty, and the fact that it is the entire show. But if you don’t like Glenn Close, I wouldn’t recommend it! |

Original Canadian Cast. Argh! Why do they always have to make these good recordings only highlights?? Diahann Carroll is fine as Norma…as you’ve probably noticed, I’m partial to Patti, but I really like Diahann too. Rex Smith is very good as Joe Gillis…I’d have a tough time choosing between him and Kevin Anderson. And Anita Louise Combe is a really good Betty! I love the orchestrations, and the ensemble is fabulous as well. My only major complaint is that it’s not even half the show! But if you’re a fan, this is definitely one worth buying. |
