Anyone who says that all Andrew Lloyd Webber shows sound alike, or that he doesn’t take chances, ought to take a look at this show.
Starlight Express opened in London on March 27, 1984, “re-launched” on November 23, 1992, and closed on January 12, 2002, making it the second-longest running musical in West End history (second only to Cats!). The show played on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre from March 15, 1987 to January 8, 1989. It is still playing in Bochum, Germany, where it began in 1988 (!), and has also played in Japan, Las Vegas, Mexico, Australia, and a U.S./Canada tour. There has also been a “Starlight on Ice” version, using ice skates rather than roller skates. A new tour began in the U.S. in April 2003, playing until the summer of 2004, and the show can currently be seen on tour in the UK, as well as in Bochum, Germany. Think you know all about this show?
