Europe!

COLOGNE/ESSEN/DUISBURG, GERMANY

August 18 – 20, 2001

This was such a nice stop – I stayed with my friend Jörn and his family in Duisburg, and we made side trips to Essen, Oberhausen, Cologne and Dinslaken.

The cathedral in Cologne was really spectacular, and we also climbed the tower for a great view of the city, and took a look through the Treasury. I also got to try some local German beers here, and spent too much money at the Sound of Music theatre store in Essen!

On my way out of the region, I took a little detour down to Moselkern to see Burg Eltz, which was definitely one of the highlights of the whole trip. It is a gorgeous castle and lovely little town – definitely worth the trip!

THE SHOWS

Elisabeth

I had been waiting SO long to see this show, I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations of it. But it was brilliant!! Pia Douwes was in as Elisabeth, and – what can I say? She just *is* Elisabeth! Hearing her sing Ich gehör nur mir live was such a treat. Uwe Kröger wasn’t there, unfortunately, but his understudy, Jesper Tyden, did a really great job. The rest of the cast was excellent as well. I will be posting a full review of it so my musical site once I’m home – in the meantime, visit the show’s beautiful website!

Sommernacht des Musicals

This was such a fun evening! The highlight for me was definitely Ethan, who sang songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, Mozart!, Elisabeth, Jekyll & Hyde and Tanz der Vampire, but the rest of the show was fabulous as well. Andreas Bieber did a really good Der Letzte Tanz from Elisabeth, and Jessica … umm, I forget her last name right now, but she will be in Mozart! … was the surprise guest and gave a beautiful rendition of Someone Like You from J&H. It was also really nice to see so many Ethan fans there. It was just a great time, and I wish I could go every year!
