In an effort to expand my weekly diet from the current 4-6 servings of pasta, I have decided to try cooking some new things. 🙂 This has involved me spending a lot of time at the grocery store looking for things I have never bought before, and don’t really know what they look like.
For example, leeks. Do you know what leeks look like? I certainly didn’t. But now I do! At least they were clearly labelled. Unlike the “sweet potatoes” I was looking for. Now, I did kind of know somewhere in the back of my brain that yams are a kind of sweet potato. But I wasn’t 100% certain that that was what I was looking for. So I ended up buying the only thing in the store that actually said “sweet potato”, which is some hairy, oddly-shaped vegetable from Jamaica. And it cost me $5.00. 🙁
When I actually try the recipe, I’ll let you know if it was worth it!
Today I tried a different recipe, for a “cheese tunnel meatloaf”. I’d never made a meatloaf before, but it turned out pretty well! It is much, much too big for one person though – I am going to have leftovers for 5 or 6 more meals. This is another problem with trying to cook different things.
Although I’m not much on cooking, I love to bake, and of course, while looking for new recipes, I found many interesting dessert recipes. But I’m also trying to cut down on the baked goods, so they’ll have to wait until my mom comes, so I have a good excuse for trying them. Like caramel apple streusel, yum!
It looks like my trip plans for Europe are going to be re-arranged again, as it turns out Titanic will be closing *four* days before I was going to see it. The injustice! So now I can still go to Hamburg to see Mamma Mia!, or skip Hamburg altogether, and go to Berlin to see Les Mis, and finish the sightseeing that I didn’t get to do the last time I was there. I have not decided yet.
Also, I was hoping Phantom might be playing in Budapest while I’m there (it’s the first time they’re doing it without the Hal Prince staging), but it’s not. Neither is Mozart!. So hopefully something will be!
