Europe!

BERLIN, GERMANY

August 21, 2001

I have to admit, Berlin was never really high up there on the list of places I wanted to go. But, when it looked like it would make sense to include it in the trip, I started getting really excited about it! Unfortunately, by that time, I had already limited my stay there to only one day – and it wasn’t nearly long enough to see everything that I wanted to see! But I think I got a good first taste of it, and I would love to go back sometime.

ITINERARY

Tuesday, August 21

Checkpoint Charlie – This

is a museum dedicated to the escapes that were

attempted over the Berlin Wall. Some of them were

successful, others weren’t. It’s pretty detailed, and has some really interesting things, but overall I thought it could have been organized a little better. It was made a little more “real” when I went to see some of the Wall that is still standing.

Berliner Dom – This was definitely the most ornate Protestant church I’d ever been in up to this point. 🙂 It is just gorgeous! There was some organ music going on while I was there, so that was nice. I climbed up to the dome for a nice view of the city, and then went down to the Hohenzollern crypt beneath the church, which was really interesting as well!

Pergamon Museum – This museum wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but it was pretty cool! The sheer size of the major attractions was just astonishing. The Pergamon Altar was really neat, but the highlight for me was the Market Gate of Melitus (sp?).

Deutscher Dom – I went here for the “Questions on German History” exhibit, which was very well done! I only had time to go through the 20th century stuff in any great detail, but I found it very interesting.

Victory Column – I got another great view of the city from the top of the column!

I also saw the Reichstag and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, but didn’t have time to go into either of them. I did get time to stop in at KaDeWe, which was fun!

ACCOMODATION

Mittes Backpackers Hostel

Aside from having a bit of trouble in locating this place, it was great!! I really like the rooms, which were all painted and decorated really nicely. The lounge was very nice as well, and it was just a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. At least, that was my impression of it in the whole 10 hours that I spent there. 🙂 I would definitely go back!
