Only in the Movies – Kiss of the Spider Woman

Brent Carver
Brent Carver. I don’t even know how to put into words how amazing his performance as Molina is. He is totally compelling and endearing, vulnerable and obsessive. I love listening to his “Dressing Them Up”, and “She’s a Woman” breaks my heart every time. I wish I could have seen him do it live! Anthony Crivello. Can we all say “sexy”? 🙂 Even tortured and bloody, he manages to look good. He also manages to make us care about Valentìn, which is not always easy to do. I love the gruffness of his voice, and the passion he infuses all his songs with, especially “The Day After That”. Check out the Anthony Crivello Appreciation Page for more.

Brian Stokes Mitchell
Brian Stokes Mitchell. I actually heard him as Valentìn before I heard Anthony, and there are some parts of his performance I like better. But overall, I don’t know if I could choose between the two of them – they’re both so great! Visit the Brian Stokes Mitchell Home Page for more.

Chita Rivera. Whenever I look at the pictures from this show, and think about the difference between the age she looks and the age she is … well, it’s depressing, let’s put it that way. 🙂 But she really did a great job playing a role that requires everything from a tortured lover to big dance numbers to playing death itself. Vanessa Williams
Vanessa Williams. I really love her in this show. Of course, I just love her voice period, so that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. But she not only sounds and looks great, but from what I can tell, her acting was fabulous too. There are a lot of great Vanessa sites out there, including Planet Vanessa.

Barbara Dorogi. When I finally got to see this show on stage, it was in Budapest, in Hungarian, with performers who were completely unknown to me. But that is often when you discover some wonderful actors – which is exactly what happened this time! Barbara was playing Aurora, and she was wonderful – a beautiful voice, and great acting. I especially liked her exaggerated over-acting in the “movie” scenes! To learn more, you can visit the Dorogi Barbara site.
