The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp

Maria is a spirited young Austrian woman studying to take her religious vows. Suspecting that Maria’s true calling may lie elsewhere, the Mother Superior arranges for her to leave the Convent and become governess to the children of the autocratic widower, Baron Von Trapp. Bringing warmth and music to the strict household of the reserved former naval captain, Maria soon wins over the children and finally the Baron. For an even more detailed look at the show, browse through the lyrics from the movie, or those from the Broadway production not used in the film.

The Sound of Music is based on the amazing real-life story of Maria Kutschera and the Trapp family, and their escape from Austria during the rise of the Nazis. Read a little more about the real Trapp family. The story had already been made into a couple of successful German films by the time it became a Broadway musical, and after that a Hollywood movie that captured the world’s heart.

I own three different recordings of this show, and they are all wonderful in their own way. Read my reviews of the CD, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

Of course I had seen this movie many, many times, but I hadn’t actually seen the show on stage until the summer of 2001! It was wonderful to see it live, and, of course, quite different from the movie. Read more of my thoughts on that particular performance.

I think probably most theatre performers have been in this show at some point in their lives, in regional theatre or more professionally. These are just a few of my favourite performers that have been in this show.
