Original Cast. I got this CD after falling in love with Parade, so the soaring melodies and wide range of styles didn’t come as a huge surprise to me. Still, I was struck anew with Jason Robert Brown’s talent. The show is basically a collection of his cabaret songs, from the hilarious “Surabaya Santa” to the already-classic “Stars and the Moon”. There’s no real cohesion here, no true voice that sings through everything, but it’s a great look at the beginnings of a fantastic composer. The cast are all fantastic, and the orchestrations are perfect – simple and never intrusive. If you’re already a Jason Robert Brown fan, you’ll find plenty to like here, and if you’re not, this will certainly help! |
