Stars and the Moon – Songs for a New World

Opening: The New World

A new world calls across the ocean
A new world calls across the sky
A new world whispers in the shadows
Time to fly, time to fly

It’s about one moment
The moment before it all becomes clear
And in that one moment
You start to believe there’s nothing to fear
It’s about one second
And just when you’re on the verge of success
The sky starts to change
And the wind starts to blow
And you’re suddenly a stranger
There’s no explaining where you stand
And you didn’t know
That you sometimes have to go
‘Round an unexpected bend
And the road will end
In a new world

A new world calls for me to follow
A new world waits for my reply
A new world holds me to a promise
Standing by, standing by

It’s about one moment
That moment you think you know where you stand
And in that one moment
The things that you’re sure of slip from your hand
And you’ve got one second
To try to be clear, to try to stand tall
But nothing’s the same
And the wind starts to blow
And you’re suddenly a stranger
In some completely different land
And you thought you knew
But you didn’t have a clue
That the surface sometimes cracks
To reveal the tracks
To a new world

You have a house in the hills
You have a job on the coast
You find a lover you’re sure you believe in
You’ve got a pool in the back
You get to the part of your life
You hold the ring in your hand

But then the earthquake hits
And the bank closes in
Then you realize you didn’t know anything
Nobody told you the best way to steer
When the wind starts to blow

And you’re suddenly a stranger (All of a sudden)
You life is different than you planned
And you’ll have to stay ‘til you somehow find a way
To be sure of what will be
Then you might be free

A new world crashes down like thunder
A new world charging through the air
A new world just beyond the mountain
Waiting there, waiting there

A new world shattering the silence
There’s a new world I’m afraid to see
A new world louder every moment
Come to me, come to me

On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship, 1492

Lord, we take this journey
To find a promised land
Lord, we take this journey
To find a promised land
And we believe in your power
We believe in your power
We believe in your power
But the end is so close,
So close at hand

Lord, these men are hungry
There just hasn’t been enough
And the journey’s been so rough
And, Lord, these men are hurting
They implore me to go back
As the planks beneath them crack

And I know it’s my responsibility
But I’m starving too
And I hurt, I do
And I’m lost
I believe in my responsibility
But I need to see
If the fruits will be worth the cost

So I’m begging you, Lord
You gotta stop, take a look
At your children who believe in this promised land
Have mercy, Lord
Stop their suffering and their woe
Stop, shine your light on these children
Who have faith in your guiding hand
I’m just begging Lord
‘Cause there’s no place else to go
I am unworthy, Lord

Lord, this ship is crowded
And the men are tired an worn
But another baby’s born
And, Lord, this ship is broken
And the sails are ripped and old
But the winds are rough and cold

And I know it’s my responsibility
When I ride the sea
These men turn to me for a sign
I believe in my responsibility
But I can’t be sure
When it’s time for your light to shine
So I’m begging you, Lord
To make it stop
Take a look at your children
Who believe in this promised land
Have mercy, Lord
Give a sign to let us know
Stop, shine your light on these children
Who have faith in your guiding hand
I’m just begging, Lord
‘Cause there’s no place else to go

Lord, save this child
I am not strong enough
I am not strong enough
Lord, save my soul
I am unworthy

Lord, take my hand
I am not strong enough
I am not strong enough
Lord, take my heart
I am unworthy

Lord, give me hope
I am not strong enough
I am not strong enough
Lord, give me light
I am unworthy
I am unworthy

Stop, take a look
At the children, at the children
Who believe in this promised land
You gotta have mercy, Lord
Have mercy, Lord
Give us strength so that we can grow

Stop, shine your light
On these children who have faith divine command

I’m just begging, Lord
I’m just begging you, Lord
I know I am unworthy
But there’s no place else to go

A new world calls across the ocean
A new world calls across the ocean
A new world calls across the sky

Just One Step

Murray,
I am out here Murray
And I am not discussing this anymore

You don’t want to buy me the fur?
Well, that’s just fine Murray
It’s not like I’m asking for much
Since you won’t buy me the dog
Or the beach house in Quogue
As if you didn’t have the money
What else is new?

I’m not gonna fight for a coat
So never mind, Murray
If that’s what’s important to you
At least I know where I stand
So, Murray, strike up the band
Because the time has come for action
Here’s what I’ll do

Clearly, I’m not wanted anymore
Now I’m not so young and beautiful
That’s okay, I’ve faced defeat before
I’m not gonna kvetch
And I’m not gonna cry
It’s not gonna get me what I wanted

So I’m simply gonna take one step
One tiny step
And Murray
Just one step, I’ll be free
One small step
Just so you shouldn’t worry
I’ll be free
And you’ll be rid of me
Isn’t that easy, Murray?
Watch me

You think this is maybe a joke
Well, it’s no joke, Murray
Murray

It looks like they’re forming a crowd
Like eighty-five at the most
Still, front page of the Post
Ma, I think it’s Maury Povich
And Connie too
Oh, hi Connie!

Now you’ll finally make your mother proud
Since she never liked me anyway
Look, she’s throwing diamonds to the crowd!

Just say the word and I’ll come back inside
But until then I’ll be happy just to know
That I can always go and take

One step
One tiny step, and Murray
One small step, adios
Just one step,
Honey you’d better hurry
Oh, yes sir,
Better give up that fur
Take it from, Old Murray
Here I…

Whoops, almost fell Murray
The mother of your children
Splattered across Fifth Avenue
In a bloody heap, Murray
And it’s all your fault

Yes, it’s you who made the money
‘Cause it’s you who owns the store
So if you don’t want to spend it
That’s your right
But it’s you who bought the penthouse
On the fifty- seventh floor
So goodnight, cheapskate, goodnight

You think I don’t know about her?
Well, I do, Murray
You think I don’t know about that
Or the things that you say
To your friends every day
I’m embarrassing
I’m fat
I’m demanding
And controlling
And whatever
Perhaps it’s true

Here’s the place where I get what I’ve earned
Why keep prying?
Why be miserable?
Lookit, Murray
Somebody’s concerned
Trust in the wind
And I’ll land in the crowd
No more complaining
I’m trashy and loud
What a sensational fucking experience
Finally, Murray, I’m getting attention

And just one step
Look at where one step leads you
One small step takes you high
Hey, just one step
Down from the man who needs you

Fuck the fur
Just send it down to her
Oh, fair thee well
And Murray, watch me fly

Murray,
Oh, I’m serious Murray
Murray!

I’m Not Afraid of Anything

Jenny’s afraid of water
I mean she swims so well
But still
She’s afraid of water
And so she won’t go near the sea
Not me

Katie’s afraid of darkness
I mean she sleeps and all
But still
She’s afraid of darkness
So when the lights are out she has to hold my hand
I don’t understand

I’m not afraid of anything
Be it mountains, water, dragons, dark or sky
I’m not afraid of anything
Tell me where’s the challenge if you never try
So watch me fly
I’m not afraid

Daddy’s afraid of babies
I mean he got through me, but now
He’s afraid of babies
Guess he’s scared of what they’ll be
Not me

And Mama’s afraid of crying
You know she tries to hold it in
But she’s afraid of crying
And she can look at me with tears stuck in her eye
And I don’t know why

I’m not afraid of anything
Be it growing old or going out of style
I’m not afraid of anything
Who would give up what they want without a trial
Another mile
I’m not afraid

And I feel the calling of adventure
And I hear the ringing in my ear
The lights are glaring
Trumpets blaring
I’m right here
And I hear the calling of tomorrow
And I feel the stirring in my bones
And David loves me
He’s afraid to hold me

Listen to the calling of excitement
Can you feel the pounding of my heart
The lights are ready
Pulse is steady
I can start

Never stop the calling of a challenge
Blessing on the water and the stones
And David loves me
He’s afraid to tell me
David loves me
He’s afraid to trust me
He’s afraid to hold me
And he’ll always be
He’s afraid of me

And I’m not afraid of anyone
I am sure to win with anyone at all
I’m not afraid of anyone
Not a soul alive can get behind this wall
So let them call
And watch them fall
‘Cause after all
I’m not afraid

The River Won’t Flow

I left my home at fifteen
I wore this very same coat
My mama said, “Son, if you stay on this path,
You’ll find a river full of money where the rich fish flow”
I said, “I’ll catch me them fish”
And I’ve searched low and searched high

Well, I’ve seen more water than Columbus had seen
I found me this lake that was greener than green
I said, “Mama, I know this is what you mean”
But when I bent for a sip, the river ran dry
The river won’t flow for me no no no
The river won’t flow for me no no no no

I live my life on the up and up
And this is where I was meant to be
But the river don’t
The river won’t
Flow for me

I never had me no house
I never had me no phone
I never had much that I didn’t have to go
And fight for the right to call it my own

I don’t expect any help
I don’t expect nothing free
It’s not about being any righteous man
It’s not about God and the master plan
It’s not about doing the best I can
No, this corner was where I was meant to be

‘Cause the river won’t flow for me no no no
The river won’t flow for me no no no no
It’s just one of the little lessons
That I learned on my Mama’s knee
The river don’t
The river won’t
Flow for me

It’s all luck,
It’s just luck
There’s no way you can rig the game because
It’s all luck,
It’s just luck
The sinner and the saint could wind up the same ‘cause
It’s all luck,
It’s just luck
That decides between the noose and the knife
It’s all luck,
It’s just luck
When you’re begging to switch
With some rich son-of-a-bitch
Who ain’t never done nothing to deserve that life

It seems so easy to run
Until there’s nowhere to go
You never get much for the dues you pay
You never go far on the easy way
There isn’t much choice
But to kneel and pray
For the river, the river, the river
To flow, flow, flow, flow, flow
Flow, flow, flow, flow, flow, flow
Flow

But the river won’t flow for you no no no
The river won’t flow for you no no no no
You gotta live how you gotta live
You gotta do what you gotta do
‘Cause the river
The river don’t
The river won’t
The river can’t
Ain’t never ever gonna flow for you
Never gonna flow for you
Never gonna flow for you
Never gonna flow for you

Stars and the Moon

I met a man without a dollar to his name
Who had no traits of any value but his smile
I met a man who had no yearn or claim to fame
Who was content to let life pass him for a while
And I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life like the movie stars led
And he kissed me right here, and he said,

“I’ll give you stars and the moon and a soul to guide you
And a promise I’ll never go
I’ll give you hope to bring out all the life inside you
And the strength that will help you grow.
I’ll give you truth and a future that’s twenty times better
Than any Hollywood plot.”
And I thought, “You know, I’d rather have a yacht.”

I met a man who lived his life out on the road
Who left a wife and kids in Portland on a whim
I met a man whose fire and passion always showed
Who asked if I could spare a week to ride with him
But I was sure that all I ever wanted
Was a life that was scripted and planned
And he said, “But you don’t understand —

“I’ll give you stars and the moon and the open highway
And a river beneath your feet
I’ll give you day full of dreams if you travel my way
And a summer you can’t repeat.
I’ll give you nights full of passion and days of adventure,
No strings, just warm summer rain.”
And I thought, “You know, I’d rather have champagne.”

I met a man who had a fortune in the bank
Who had retired at age thirty, set for life.
I met a man and didn’t know which stars to thank,
And then he asked one day if I would be his wife.
And I looked up, and all I could think of
Was the life I had dreamt I would live
And I said to him, “What will you give?”

“I’ll give you cars and a townhouse in Turtle Bay
And a fur and a diamond ring
And we’ll be married in Spain on my yacht today
And we’ll honeymoon in Beijing.
And you’ll meet stars at the parties I throw at my villas
In Nice and Paris in June.”

And I thought, “Okay.”
And I took a breath
And I got my yacht
And the years went by
And it never changed
And it never grew
And I never dreamed
And I woke one day
And I looked around
And I thought, “My God…
I’ll never have the moon.”

She Cries

There’s a couple of things I’ve learned
On the many roads I’ve taken
Flames are not what get you burned
It’s the cold and the ice
Here’s a piece of advice
I got from a little bird
The flames can get you
Stirred
It’s the cold that leaves you shaken

I don’t like to philosophize
I just want to tell a story
Always leave when a woman cries
Never look in a woman’s eyes
You’ll get stuck with a high and rising fever
And then you can’t leave her
Please, don’t wait man
It’s almost too late man

She cries and you want to hold her
She lies and you want to run away
But just give her a minute
I promise you’re in it to stay

She smiles and you’ll stay forever
She screams
Well, that’s the price you pay
But there’s no one can make you
Forget how you feel
For all she can take
You’ve got more there to steal
So you don’t mind a bit of surprise
And she cries

I don’t like to admit I’m wrong
I believe in guts and glory
But it’s time I should change my song
I’ve been here just a bit too long
Always thought I was much too strong for hating
And still I keep waiting…

And while I’m resolving
That door keeps revolving
She cries and you want to hold her
She lies and you’re half way out the door
But you never can do it
She’ll make you go through it once more

She smiles and you’ll stay forever
She sings
Oh, she’s got you now for sure
And each time that you swear
That you will not give in
She’ll throw you a stare
That’ll show you can’t win
It’s amazing how hard each man tries
But she cries

All of a sudden
You fall for her charms
You promise you’ll stop all her tears
All of sudden
She’s back in your arms
And the walls start closing
And blocking out the light
And changing all your dreams
And right before your eyes

She cries
And I don’t know the answer
She spies
And there’s no place I can hide
When I look in the mirror,
There’s nothing but fear here inside
I run
And still she is right behind me
I fall
The chasm is too wide

So I’m stuck in this world of her magic mystique
Where I’ll never be more than her toy of the week
But each time I prepare my goodbyes
Well, she catches me looking
And she opens the floodgates

And she cries

The Steam Train

You don’t know me, but you will
Let me introduce myself

Submitted for your approval
A picture of basketball
The man with the muscle
And the man with the moves

Submitted for your approval
The man who’s too fast to fall
The man who can hustle
And the man who can fly
Who always is hot
When it’s time for the shot

‘Cause at any time you want me at all
Any rhyme or reason
Brother, I’m the brother you call to play
Spring or summer,
Winter or fall
Any time or season
Catch the boy who’s moving the ball away

It’s called a steam train
Coming down the track
Better watch your step
Better watch your back
Can’t you see the shadow
Fast and black
And the steam train’s rolling by

Steam train chuggin’ down the hill
If you don’t move now then you never will
He’s on your tail and he’s in for the kill
Then the steam train’s rolling by

.

.

.

Listen, I have got my hands on the wheel
Someone’s got to see us
Taking all the train’s got to steal away
Watch me as I sign up a deal
With Nike and Adidas
All the world is starting to feel the waves

From the steam train coming down the track
Better watch your step
Better watch your back
Better keep your eyeballs open, Jack
When the steam train’s rolling by

Steam train chuggin’ down the hill
If you want to live
Better don’t stand still
He’s on the move
And he’s in for the kill
And the steam train’s rolling by

You don’t know me. The last time I saw my father I was five years old. He hadn’t been home for two months. He came into the apartment at 3 o’clock in the morning, set fire to the drapes and carpets and then woke up me and my sister, carried us outside, then walked away while we watched the house burn down. You don’t know me, but you will.

A new world just across the river
A new world where I’ll have it all
A new world just around the corner
Here it comes
Here it comes

You don’t know me. There were 12 boys in my 5th grade class at Sojourner Truth. 4 of them are in jail, 6 of them are dead, and Gordon Conners works at Twin Donut on 125th Street. You don’t know me, but you will.
