I’m one of those people that never quite got all the Rocky Horror hype. I like the movie, but I don’t build any part of my life around it. 🙂 And I was interested in the Broadway revival, but not necessarily enough to go and see it – until Terrence Mann took over as Frank ‘N Furter. Then there was no longer a question of whether or not I would go!
Alison was along for this one, and we didn’t buy the audience participation kit, or know any of the things you’re supposed to shout out, so we mostly just sat watching the rest of the audience with a mixture of amusement and fear. 🙂 There was one guy in particular who was making an ass of himself – so much so that Terrence turned to him at one point and said, “Shut the fuck up!” And then Robin Leach, who was also harrassed by the same guy later, remarked, “I can see why he’s annoyed with you.” 🙂
The cast for this show was really very good – along with Terrence, I was interested in seeing Jarrod Emick, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Liz Larsen. I had also been looking forward to seeing Sebastian Bach as Riff Raff, but we had his understudy instead, Jason Wooten, who was also very good.
I liked the way the stage was set up at Circle in the Square, and the way the movie theatre seats at the beginning opened up to form the stage. The set design overall was very inventive. Unfortunately, the sound wasn’t quite as good, and that, coupled with the audience shouting over the actors, made the lines a bit hard to hear at times. I was glad that I knew the songs ahead of time.
Anyway, it was overall a very enjoyable, if also very odd experience, and I’m really glad I got to see it! I suppose I will have to wait until another of my favourite actors decides to do it before I’ll see it again. 🙂
