A review of the movie added!

It is Christmas Eve on the lower East side of New York City. A group of friends comes together and shares the night in a special way. Over the next year, as relationships grow and change, they have to struggle with paying the rent, eviction, death, drugs, and living one day at a time.

Rent is based on the classic opera La Bohème, though, obviously, modified and updated quite a bit. At its heart, it is about people trying to create art in circumstances which do not lend themselves to artistry. Read some more about the opera or find out more about the history of the musical. In 2005, a movie version was released – read some of my thoughts on the film.

There are quite a few different recordings of this show available now. I started with the Broadway recording, of course, which I think is destined to become a classic. I’ve got a couple of the foreign language CDs now, and hope to add more soon! Take a look at my reviews of the CDs, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

I haven’t seen this show on Broadway yet, and I think that’s something I will need to do sooner or later. It just seems so much more relevant in New York. However, I did see the Canadian cast, and they were really great as well. Read more of my thoughts on that particular performance.

There are a lot of great actors who have been in this show, and I have discovered a lot of new people through this show too, which is always a good thing. Take a look at my thoughts on some of my favourites!
