The Producers

What do a down-and-out Broadway producer, his anxiety-attack-prone accountant, a dancing Swedish secretary, and a Nazi playwright have in common? They’re just part of the crazy cast of characters that make up The Producers. When two men hit upon the idea that a flop could make more money than a hit, chaos ensues. Read the complete synopsis to find out what happens!

The Producers was originally a movie, released in 1968. There was some music in the movie, most notably the title number of the theatrical event Springtime for Hitler. But Mel Brooks decided to take it one step further, and wrote a bunch of new songs for the Broadway version, a real old-fashioned musical comedy. Read more about the movie, or about the development of the musical. In 2005, the musical was turned back into a movie – read some of my thoughts on the musical movie.

There’s only one recording available from this show so far…read my review of the CD, or read about the video special Recording the Producers, which takes a look at the process of recording the cast album. You can also listen to a sound clip from one of my favourite songs.

I managed to see this show kind of by chance before the Tony Awards, and it was really amazing to see the incredible original cast! I’ve seen it three more times since then, once more with the original cast, once with a few new faces in New York, and when it finally arrived in Toronto. Read some more of my thoughts on the performances I’ve seen.

This show wouldn’t work without a really great cast to pull it off, and there have definitely been some amazing people involved in it along the way. Read a bit more about some of my favourites.
