Sink me, I do love this show. It’s strange…it’s quite unlike my attachment to any other show. I guess because it was treated so badly by the critics, and because I saw it in its first months of performances, I feel somewhat protective of it. Is that strange? 🙂 Anyway, I’m not alone! Anyway, more about the show! It opened November 9, l997, and the new version officially opened a year later. It closed at the Minskoff theatre on May 30, 1999, but reopened September 10, 1999 at the Neil Simon theatre, with a new look and a largely new cast, and that version closed on January 2, 2000. There was a touring production that started on February 20, 2000 in New Haven and finished in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 1, 2001. It was nominated for three Tony Awards in 1998, for Best Book, Best Actor – Douglas Sills, and Best Musical. It can now be seen in amateur productions across the U.S., and a German professional version is currently playing at the Opernhaus Halle in repertory. |
