Robespierre’s Reign of Terror is wreaking its bloody havoc but the elusive Scarlet Pimpernel is still at large – so far …
Will the Scarlet Pimpernel triumph? Or might he yet be betrayed – by love?
I kind of wish I’d realized this was the final part of Percy’s revolutionary adventures before I’d read it, but I mean, it’s not as if I didn’t know that the Revolution ended and Robespierre was executed anyway, so I guess it doesn’t really matter. 🙂
Anyway, I loved this book! I enjoyed it much more than the first one…and I think it’s mostly because there was more dialogue between Chauvelin and Percy. I think those two characters are just hilarious together! Here’s one of my favourite bits:
Percy: “Such as murder, outrage, abduction…and wearing breeches the cut of which would provoke a saint to indignation!”
I also much prefered how Marguerite’s character was portrayed in this novel, compared to the first one. I suppose the fact that she now knows that Percy is the Pimpernel makes a bit of a difference in how she behaves towards him, which was probably my biggest problem with her before. 🙂
The main character of this book, if there is one, is Theresia Cabarrus, who, despite her obvious flaws, I found to be an interesting character, and one that you could sympathize with. I also completely related to her admiration of Percy and jealousy of Marguerite. 🙂
So, without giving too much more away, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the story…it’s got all the adventure, danger, comedy and romance that we’ve come to expect! Long live the Scarlet Pimpernel! 🙂
The passports appeared in order; but even if they were not, who cared, on this day of all days, when tryanny was crushed and men dared to be men again?
