The Point of No Return – Phantom of the Opera

The Charles Dance Movie

My mother taped this off TV for me when I was away at school, and before I got the chance to watch it, someone taped over the end! So, to this day, I don’t know how it ends. And, the truth of the matter is, I don’t care. 🙂

There are some good things about this movie, including some lovely dialogue and beautiful sets (except for Erik’s lair). However, the dubbing of the opera scenes was *terrible*. Also, I had some major problems with both the plot and Dance’s Erik. I think that giving Erik a loving family changes the story far too much…it takes away most of his motivation for becoming what he is. But then, Dance’s Erik bears very little resemblence to Leroux’s anyway. He is must too quiet and nice…he almost seems scared of his own shadow! Erik should be dangerous, and Dance is the complete opposite. Overall, I think the best word to describe this version is “tame”. And I, for one, don’t think that’s a good thing. 🙂
