Night Magic
“The song at an end, he sat feeling the dear weight of
her head on his shoulder, wishing he were an ordinary
man so that he might take her in his arms and claim her
as his own.”
This a story “based on the Phantom theme”, and also on the classic Beauty and the Beast story, so it is not exactly about our Erik, but I found it very interesting anyway.
The story involves a young girl, Marisa, who meets and falls in love with a deformed older man, Erik (imagine that!), and then follows their life together. It took me off guard at first, because the premise of the story is very similar to one I had started writing several years ago, but it quickly takes a different turn.
I wasn’t expecting them to sleep together or get married so soon into the book, and I have to say that I found the whole courtship part more interesting than the married life part, and was disappointed to see the emphasis put on the second half.
Although I think Christine is a weak character, I thought that Marisa was almost too straight-forward and bold to be likeable. Considering the first part of the book, when Marisa is still a teenager, is supposed to take part in the 1960’s, I thought that she was too much a “modern woman”. I did rather like the character of Erik, though he is certainly not equal to that of Kay or Leroux.
Overall the book was a good read (though a little heavy on the sex scenes), and I wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading it, though I found the ending dissatisfying, and it almost made me want to go back to that old story I’d started writing and see if I could do a better job of it.
a grown man’s wisdom and apprehension.”
