Original Broadway Cast Original Broadway Cast. This was the very first “cast recording” in the modern sense, and is one that makes a great addition to any collection. Although the recording, 60 years old, certainly sounds dated, it is still a great representation of the show, and the cast is very good. My only real complaint is that the songs all sound a little slow. I’ll be totally honest, and say I don’t listen to it nearly as much as I do to the newer recordings, but it’s worth buying, for its historical significance if nothing else!
London Revival Cast 1998 London Revival Cast. This recording is fairly complete – it includes a lot of dance music and connecting dialogue that help move the story along. The updated orchestrations sound wonderful. I bought the recording primarily for the cast, especially Hugh Jackman as Curly, and he doesn’t disappoint! Shuler Hensley is also a fantastic Jud. I would certainly recommend it to any fan of the show, or as a great introduction to the musical.
