This show is not your typical musical. In a way, it’s sort of like non-representational art. Visually, realism is not the goal. It creates an effect, and it’s up to the viewer to accept it. People will likely either think it’s brilliant or ridiculous. I’m leaning more towards the former. A huge part of this show is the dancing, and it’s unlike any dancing I’ve ever seen before. The way the bells are incorporated into it, and the incredible acrobatics…it’s almost closer to Cirque de Soleil than typical Broadway dancing. “Notre-Dame de Paris” first opened in Paris on September 18, 1998, and then embarked on a four-month tour of Canada. The musical has also played a sell-out tour of France, Belgium & Switzerland. A production played at the Paris Las Vegas hotel for several months, and the show opened at the Dominion Theatre in London on May 23, 2000, and closed on October 6, 2001. The show was staged in Beijing, China for five performances in 2002. A Russian version opened in Moscow on May 21, 2002. An Italian production is currently touring in Italy. There have been several rumours of a Broadway production, but nothing substantial yet! |
