Although the Newsies movie came out in 1992, it took nearly 20 years for the show to reach the stage. The musical version debuted at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey on September 25, 2011, and opened on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre on March 29, 2012. The show was nominated for 8 Tony Awards at the 2012 Tonys, and won two:
