Movie Soundtrack. If you like the film, you will enjoy this soundtrack. I tend to skip over certain songs (looking at you, Medda), but overall I love listening to it. Some of the cast, like Christian Bale, aren’t trained singers, but they do a good job with the really enjoyable material. Particular favourites are Santa Fe, Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day (which is familiar to many Disney fans because of its inclusion on the Disney Greatest Hits CD), King of New York and The World Will Know.

Broadway Cast Recording. I was excited to hear some updated orchestrations for this show, and overall it’s quite strong. There are a couple of little things that threw me, like taking out the mother’s part in Carrying the Banner, which was a little moment I had always enjoyed in the movie soundtrack. Medda’s song is okay – an improvement on the movie at least! Watch What Happens is an okay song, it didn’t grab me at first but has started to grow on me over repeated listens. I don’t particularly like the changes to Seize the Day – new lyrics, new phrases, new orchestrations are not as powerful as the original. I also don’t really like the addition of a different tune to Once and For All. And lastly, I’m not sure it’s necessary to include all the music for the dance breaks – but that could just be me. 🙂 So, that sounds like a bit of griping, but honestly I do enjoy it. If you’ve only seen the show on stage, you’ll prefer this recording to the movie soundtrack, but conversely if you’ve only seen the movie, you’ll want to get that recording instead. |
