Seize the Day – Newsies

Christian Bale Christian Bale. Jack Kelly in the film, Christian is the main reason I knew about this movie at all, as I had several friends who were a *little* obsessed with him at the time. I’ve read since that he’s a bit embarrassed to have this movie on his resume, but I wish he wouldn’t be – his Jack is a great blend of reluctant leader, cool without trying, slightly disrespectable kid on the street. And he pulls off the singing requirements of the role quite well. His Santa Fe is probably my favourite song of the film; it’s earnest and real. You can find out more about him at Christian Bale.org.
Max Casella. Besides Christian, Max was the only other familiar face at the time in the cast of boys in Newsies, since I was of course knew him from Doogie Howser. As Racetrack in the film, he’s the streetwise, wise-cracking guy in the bunch, but also a steadfast friend standing behind Jack. I really enjoyed him in this role. Corey Cott. I missed seeing Jeremy Jordan in the show, so Corey was my Broadway Jack Kelly. He’s got a great presence on stage and is a fine singer. The friendships between him and the other newsies are believable, and he has a good chemistry with Katherine as well. I’ll be interested to see what he does next after this show. Why don’t you follow him on Twitter? Corey Cott
Ben Fankhauser Ben Fankhauser. Although it felt like the part of Davey was pretty scaled down in the show compared to the movie, Ben still created a very real-feeling character and made the most of the moments he did have. His interactions with Les were particularly nice. If you’re interesting in learning more, he’s also on Twitter.
