My Fair Lady opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York on March 15, 1956, and transferred to the Broadhurst Theatre and then to the Broadway Theatre before it closed on September 29, 1962. The show won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Actor (Rex Harrison). The original cast went on to London, where the production at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane played for five and a half years.
A universal success, the show has played around the world, including the Soviet Union in 1960. It is a favourite of amateur and regional theatres. There have been three Broadway revivals, in 1976/77, 1981 and 1993/94. The most recent London revival opened at the National Theatre on March 15, 2001 (45 years to the day from the original premiere), and transferred to the show’s original London home, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in July 2001. This production closed on August 30, 2003. |
