Till There Was You – The Music Man

The Music Man opened at the Majestic Theatre on December 19, 1957 with Robert Preston playing the role of Harold Hill and Barbara Cook as Marian Paroo, the town librarian. The show ran for 1,375 performances, winning eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical and Best Score) and a Grammy Award for the cast album. The film version was released in 1962, and won the Academy Award for Best Score.

A Broadway revival opened at the Neil Simon theatre on April 27, 2000. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, but did not win anything. This production closed on December 30, 2001.

The show is a perennial favourite of amateur and regional theatres – chances are it will be playing somewhere near you sometime soon! A new television movie version of the show was aired in February 2003, and is available on DVD.
