Miss Saigon came about as a combination of two things – the story of a novella by John Luther Long which was previously adapted by Pucinni in his famous Madame Butterfly, set against the backdrop of a more recent conflict, the Vietnam War. Here is a short history of the musical.

I own three different recordings of this show, two in English, and it is one of those rare cases where I listen to them both pretty equally. Take a look at my reviews of the CDs, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite musical moments. Or, play the music yourself with the sheet music.

You can also check out a video of I’d Give My Life for You, from the Broadway cast’s performance on The Today Show in 1998.

I fell in love with this show the first time I heard it (as in, sobbing out loud), so I was really anxious to see it on stage, but, for whatever reason, it didn’t move me quite as much on stage. I really wanted to see the production in Switzerland in 2003, but it just didn’t work out. 🙁 So for now, read more of my thoughts on the specific performance I saw of the national tour.

The cast I saw was pretty good, but overall I think I prefer those on the different recordings, who are pretty fabulous. Take a look at my thoughts on some of my favourites!
