Martin Guerre had its world premiere at the Prince Edward Theatre in London on July 10, 1996. The show closed for a few days in November, and reopened on November 11, 1996 with several revisions. It won the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and closed on February 28, 1998.
A further revised production toured the UK from November 28, 1998 to August 7, 1999. There were more revisions before the American tour, which played from September 29, 1999 until April 8, 2000. It was supposed to go from there to Broadway, but circumstances conspired to prevent that happening.
