The Original London Cast Recording. The first recording, which was sufficient to make people like myself, who have never seen the show, into fans. The cast is great…I love Rebecca Lock, Iain Glen and Michael Matus. My favourite songs include “Martin Guerre” and the reprise, “Me”, and “Working on the Land”. I’ve got some issues with the pronunciation of a few French words, but other than that, I have very few complaints! The orchestrations are fabulous throughout. Overally, I would highly recommend this CD! |

1999 British Cast Recording. I don’t think I have ever heard a show so completely re-invent itself as this show did from the first recording to the second one. Not only is there new music, but every existing piece of music has been changed in some way. The lyrics are all completely new – some are a big improvement, others I miss the original (especially “Martin Guerre”), but overall it is really, really interesting to hear, and truth to tell, I probably prefer this version a little more overall. The “Why” trio at the end is fantastic. The cast is really wonderful, and it’s a more fluid telling of the story. However, if you enjoy the music, I really would suggest getting both! |
