When Will Someone Hear? – Martin Guerre

Joanna Riding
Joanna Riding. It took me a little bit to get used to her Bertrande after being so accustomed to Rebecca Lock, but I just love it now. If I had to pick a favourite line, it would be the way she sings, “There’s no devil in me, no devil in Martin…” Anyway. 馃檪 To find out more, visit the Official Website of Joanna Riding.

Matthew Cammelle. I’d heard so much about him in Les Mis, and then had seen him as Raoul in Phantom, so I was really excited to hear his Arnaud, and it doesn’t disappoint. I love his “Live with Somebody you Love”, and so many small bits throughout the show. Learn a bit more about him at Raoul’s Realm.

Rebecca Lock. I’m not generally a fan of very many female voices, but hers is one that I really do enjoy. She makes Bertrande a very sympathetic figure, and I just adore songs like “Someone”.

Iain Glen. Despite the horrid French accent, I really do enjoy his performance quite a bit. 馃檪 He sounds very sweet in most parts, and I love his rendition of the “Martin Guerre” reprise. He sounds fine when he *sings* the words “Martin Guerre”… 馃檪
Stephen BUNTROCK!
Stephen Buntrock. I didn’t actually see him, but I’ve heard he made a fabulous Arnaud on the U.S. tour. I *have* seen him in Titanic and Jane Eyre, and heard him in Les Mis, so I can vouch for his vocal and acting abilities! Visit Stephen Buntrock – an unofficial site to find out more.

Hugh Panaro. Ditto for Hugh…I didn’t see him in this show, but I’ve seen him in Phantom and heard him in Side Show and Show Boat, and was just thrilled when I heard he’d be doing this show. I’m sure he was a wonderful Martin Guerre! Check out Hugh Panaro Online.

Matt Rawle. Though I prefer the “Martin Guerre” reprise to the original version of it, I think I have to say I like Matt’s voice better for that song. For being a title character, he really doesn’t appear in the show very much, he does a really good job whenever he is around. 馃檪 For more about Matt, check out his official site.
Stephen Weller. As much as I enjoyed Matt, I absolutely love the emotion that Stephen has in his voice as Martin. I’m especially impressed with his anger – it’s hard to *sing* anger – you often end up just shouting. But he does a very good job. 馃檪 Anyway, I’d love to see him on stage sometime! Stephen Weller
Maurice Clark Maurice Clark. I didn’t think anyone could equal J茅r么me Pradon as Guillaume, but he sure comes close. 馃檪 Often, I’ll get a new cast recording and most of the cast will be good, but there’ll be somebody from the old one that I really miss. I was very afraid that would happen with this recording, but I honestly enjoy him just as much as J茅r么me!
Juliette Caton. She’s Bertrande on the TV special I saw, and she’s really wonderful…the fact that she cried while singing during rehearsal really moved me. 馃檪 And I finally realized where I saw her before – in “The Last Temptation of Christ”! Anyway, you can find out a bit more about her (in French) at this page.
J茅r么me Pradon. As my friend Mandy calls him, the “original psycho Frenchie”. 馃檪 I first heard him on the Paris Revival Cast of Les Mis, but I was much more interested in his performance in Martin Guerre. Guillaume isn’t exactly a likeable character, but J茅r么me does a really good job of playing him! To find out more, you can visit The Official J茅r么me Pradon Website!
Michael Matus. I just love him and Louison. 馃檪 On the special, though, he stuttered a *lot*…anyone know if he was like that on stage? I found it really distracting. But I love how he sings on the CD! He’s one of my favourite characters!! 馃檪
