Martin Guerre is based on the legend of a soldier who arrives in the small village of Artigat in the French countryside, claiming to be Martin Guerre, a native son who had disappeared seven years earlier. The woman he left behind is the only one who realizes it’s not Martin – but she has her own reasons for staying silent. Read the complete synopsis.

The story of Martin Guerre is an old one, and there have been many adaptations made of it, including another play, The House of Martin Guerre, as well as the popular 1982 film The Return of Martin Guerre. Read more about the development of the musical, or one of the movie versions of the story.

I’ve got two recordings of this show, which are really quite different from each other! And I enjoy different parts of both of them, so it’s hard to pick a favourite! Read more of my thoughts on the CDs, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

Or, get a Martin Guerre wallpaper for your computer!

I had big plans to finally go and see this show in New York in 2000, but, unfortunately, it never made it! So I still haven’t seen it. 🙁 But, as soon as I do, I’ll add my reviews and other thoughts here!

Since I’ve never seen the show, almost all my favourite performers come off the CDs. Read a bit more about my favourites that have been in the show.
