
Mamma Mia! opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999, and has been a major hit, breaking all kinds of box office records. In Toronto, where the show had its North American premiere at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on May 23, 2000, it far extended on its original planned run, finally closing on May 22, 2005.
A U.S. tour began in San Francisco on November 15, 2000, and played Los Angeles and Chicago before opening at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York in November of 2001. The show was nominated for 5 Tony Awards in 2002. The show continues to tour the U.S., and there is a second permanent production at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
An Australian production opened at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne on 9 June 2001, where it played until June 23, 2002. It played at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane from July 5, 2002, and in Sydney at the Lyric Theatre from September 26, 2002. A German production is currently playing at the Operettenhaus Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. The show had its Asian premiere in Tokyo, Japan at the Umi Theatre in December 2002.
A Dutch production opened at the Beatrix Theatre in Utrecht, Holland on September 28, 2003. It played briefly in Seoul, South Korea in January & February, 2004, setting sales records there. There is an international tour (performed in English) touring Europe in 2005.
