The New Amsterdam Theatre in New York
The Lion King celebrated its world premiere at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on July 8, 1997. It opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York on November 13, 1997, where it is still playing. This original Broadway production won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Director, and the awards for lighting design, set design, costumes and choreography.

A London production opened at the Lyceum Theatre on October 19, 1999, where it is still playing. The Toronto production opened at the Princess of Wales Theatre in March of 2000, and closed November 2, 2003. A German production, also still playing, can be seen at Theater im Hafen, where it opened in December 2001. The show is also currently playing in Japan.
