If you read my first review, you’re probably wondering just why I went back again. 🙂 Well, my friend Krista came out to visit me, and she’d never been to the theatre before in her life, so I wanted to expose her to some of it. Naturally, I got us tickets for Mamma Mia!, but my mother thought I should take her to Lion King as well, since the effects and costumes would probably impress her.
The cast was quite different from the first time I saw it, and generally a little better. It was still Ted Atherton as Scar, thankfully, and he was just as good the second time as well. We also had Saskia Garel as Nala, whom I enjoyed quite a bit, having seen her a few years before as Mimi in Rent.
Now that I had seen all the costumes and effects, the lack of emphasis on the story stood out for me even more the second time. I don’t think it’s the kind of show you would want to see multiple times. Krista enjoyed it, but she liked Mamma Mia, which we saw two days later, a lot better.
