Kiss Me, Kate opened at the Century Theatre on Broadway on December 30, 1948. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Authors, Best Composter, and the first award ever given for Best Musical. It played 1,077 performances before closing on July 28, 1951. The London premiere was at the London Coliseum on March 8, 1951, where it played for 400 performances.
The revival opened on November 18, 1999 at the Martin Beck Theatre, where it closed on December 30, 2001. This production also received five Tonys, including Best Musical Revival, and Best Actor (Brian Stokes Mitchell). It was subsequently mounted in London at the Victoria Palace Theatre from October 30, 2001 through August 24, 2002. In the 50 years between Broadway productions, this show has been performed by countless times by regional and amateur groups, as well as in other countries around the world. |
