Getting to Know You – The King and I

Movie Soundtrack Movie Soundtrack. This is a remastered version of the film soundtrack, and it sounds great! The quality of the recording is much improved, and there are bonus tracks, including the complete music for “The Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet. Yul Brynner’s performance here is wonderful, and, though most of the rest of the cast was dubbed, it makes little difference when you’re just listening to it. There are also extensive liner notes that make a good read!
Broadway Revival Cast Broadway Revival Cast. The best thing about this recording is definitely Donna Murphy. Her fresh take on the material, such as “Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?”, is wonderful. It was weird for me to hear someone other than Yul Brynner as the King, and though Lou Diamond Phillips does a decent job, it really can’t compare. The orchestrations have a bit more of an Asian feel to them, and the rest of the cast is excellent, a definite improvement over the film. I’d be hard-pressed to pick between the two – I enjoy this one a lot, but everyone should hear Yul Brynner in this show!
