This 1955 film version of the musical starred Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown, Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit and Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide. It was nominated for four Oscars, but did not win any.
The format of the story was altered a bit for the movie version, mostly to accomodate the casting of Frank Sinatra (who, of course, is a singer) as Nathan and Marlon Brando (who is not) as Sky – where normally Sky would sing much more, in the film, Sinatra is given more singing lines. There have also been some alterations and complete replacement of songs. A good contrast of the two versions can be found on this site. I’ve seen this movie only once, and it was interesting, but certainly its own creature compared to the stage version. I definitely prefer the show on stage, and wouldn’t recommend the movie as an introduction to the show, but if you’re curious, it’s got some interesting moments. |
