When making a musical out of Sholem Aleichem’s stories of a Jewish milkman, nobody expected it to be a big commercial success. However, the show was one of the biggest musicals of the 1960s, and has become an enduring classic. The film version has only helped to cement its place in theatre history.

I own two different recordings of this show so far, both of which are really good. Read my reviews of the CDs, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

I’ve seen this show three times so far, twice at the Stratford Festival, with Brent Carver as Tevye, and once in New York. The Stratford production was brilliant, and really increased my appreciation for the show. Read more about experiences with the show.

The characters in this show are so rich, there is a lot an actor can do with them – here are a few of my favourites that have taken on this show.
