Original Broadway Cast. I think any recording of this show is naturally going to have the disadvantage in that it can’t transport the central conceit of the show, which is the Man in Chair. It’s just not the same without having him there to take you through the show in quite the same way, though of course some of his commentaries are included. That said, the music on its own is quite enjoyable, which perhaps comes across more in the recording than it did on stage. The cast is also great, most epecially Bob Martin and Sutton Foster. I can’t see it ever being a real favourite of mine, but if you enjoyed the show on stage, you’ll definitely like this recording as well. If you haven’t seen it yet, you may be a little put off by it – but just keep in mind that’s all pastiche, and that should help. 🙂 |
