The movie version of A Chorus Line came out in 1985, and starred Michael Douglas as Zach, the director. There were several differences between the film and stage versions, including several cut songs, and new ones added. The movie was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Song for a new song added to the film, “Surprise, Surprise”.
I saw the film primarily because it had Terrence Mann in it, as Larry. It’s not a huge part, but it’s always nice to see him. Overall, I enjoyed the film, but it wasn’t particularly memorable. As I haven’t seen the show on stage, I’ve got nothing to compare it to, but I can well imagine that it would be more impressive in person.
I’ve also read some interesting reviews that talk about how the focus of the film is different from the stage show, how it focuses on kids trying to break into show business, rather than on those who have been around for a while, and are just trying to get one more job to stay out of unemployment.
Regardless, it’s worth a watch, but if you’re wanting to see what all the fuss was about for the original Broadway production, you won’t see it here.
