In 1994, Universal Pictures decided to produce an animated version of Cats. Little is known about the upcoming film,
other than that Lord Lloyd Webber has written a couple of new songs for it, and the screenplay, by Tom Stoppard, is to
have more of a plot than the stage version, incorporating “new comedic and dramatic elements into the storyline.” It will
definitely be interesting to see what comes of it! I know I will be going to see it! 🙂

However, in 1998, a video version of Cats was released. So I’m assuming the other movie was postponed or cancelled. 🙂 Anyway, the video is great! It’s almost the entire show (it’s strange that they cut the parts they did, but anyway), and the cast is, for the most part, fabulous. Although a video can never capture the entire effect of a live show, it was interesting to see some of the close-up facial expressions and interactions that you might miss when seeing it on stage. And I’m very happy that, again for the most part, they decided to use stage actors for the roles. Elaine Paige as Grizabella is wonderful, and it’s amazing how many of the rest of them really look like cats! 🙂 There has also been a “collectors edition” released which includes a “making of” documentary as well as interviews with the show’s creative team – very interesting! |
