The Journey Home – Bombay Dreams

Bombay Dreams at the Apollo Victoria

Bombay Dreams began when Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber heard the music of A R Rahman while working with director Shekhar Kapur. The show officially opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London on June 19, 2002, and closed there on June 13, 2004. The BBC filmed and aired a documentary about the show’s development from its conception in 1999 to the dress rehearsal at the end of May 2002.

The show has received a lot of press attention, as evidence of a larger infiltration of Indian culture to the West. There has been one single released from the show, “Shakalaka Baby” sung by Preeya Kalidas.

The Broadway production of Bombay Dreams opened at the Broadway theatre on April 29, 2004, and closed there on January 1, 2005. This production was nominated for three Tony Awards. There have been touring productions in both the UK and North America.
