OVERTURE

Jabbadoor, the warlord, is returning from a succesful campaign. He has

sold his soul to the demon god Ba´al-Zebub, and the seagod Poseidon is

raging.

THE STORM

The Sirens

When thunder roars and water rises

Then you will hear us calling

And you will feel the sky come falling

We are the sirens and we sing for you

A song of death and devastation

A song of rain and thunder

The winds of wrath will blow you under

You can’t escape no matter what you do

You have your life, but live in darkness

The truth is far too frightening

Tonight you may be struck by lightning

And you will never know the reason why

Sailors:

Boatsman on deck!

Aye

The captain looks for Jabbadoor

He is down below

He was there before

I know he’s down there, I heard him pray

For his god to give him wings

So he could up and fly away

His god is not to be relied on

Let us pray to our mighty poseidon

I’m not upset, and yet

I know he found his god

In some strange revelation

Now all is going well for Jabbadoor

He is changing

Lately when I sleep, you know

I have this sensation

It’s not safe to be around here anymore

We were in the east

I swear I saw him dying

But he pulled the arrow out

And if you think I’m lying

Just look at his face – the evil eye

Oh great Poseidon we are all gonna die

Shut up, we’ll all be all right

Grab your things and turn in for the night

Crying like babies

You’re worse than my mother

Acting like women

But why should I bother, you cowards

Hush there is no cause for alarm

Look at the sea it’s quiet and calm

Sailors are brave

And they all seem so strong

So why all this shouting

When nothing is wrong

We are safe here

Ha! I’ve sailed all my life little friend

Very soon we’ll be facing the end

I´ve seen ’em all and

It´s true when they tell you

Nothing compares

To the terrible hell you are facing

Death waits at the end of the day

Only waiting to take you away

Great are the gods

And the life that they gave us

We are all sinners

And nothing can save us from

Paying the prize

Sirens

Ha ha ha

Sailors

Captain

Aye

It’s worse than before

Save us and bring us safely ashore

Cut the sails!

Aye!

Everyone’s ready! Stay on the starboard!

And just keep her steady! We’ll make it!

This is it now, so don’t be naive

It is only yourself you decieve

I’ve been through hurricanes raging with thunder

This is no storm

It’s the world going under

All hands on deck

Sirens

Ha ha ha

Jabbadoor

Ba’al-Zebub! (the sirens scream) Ba’al-Zebub!

Lord of darkness, listen to me

You have brought me to the test

All this time I’ve asked for nothing

Grant me now this one request

Lay upon me all your power

Fill me up with all your might

Grant me the wisdom to devour

All your hatred, all your spite

Atlas! How they all respect him

Even so I have to try

When I’m back they can’t protect him

He will vanish, he must die

He’s a god to them

And what surrounds him,

He may call his own

With the power to defeat him,

I can take away his throne

I will make a pact forever

Make me Atlas mighty God

In return I swear I’ll never

Feel the heat run through my blood

I will never have affection

Never love like mortals do

Bringing evil to perfection

I will give my life for you.

In Atlantis everyone is eagerly anticipating the return of Jabbadoor; the young man Silvan, who works at the harbour, looks to the horizon for different reasons.

FAR AND DISTANT PLACES

Silvan

Light fades away

Rulers of the universe take heed of us all

Sun has set

And the nightly shadows covers the wall

Hear the distant echo

Of the last bugle call

Silence prevails

And fireflies gently try to light up the sky

Tonight they shine vividly

Tomorrow they die

And so another day of my life passes by

Out there in the distance, so it seems

Are visions of places

I’ve seen in my dreams

Wonder why I always long to see

Far and distant places

When this is home to me

Since I was young

I have watched the soldiers

Leaving day after day

Looked at the horizon

Seen their ships fade away

They are bound for glory,

Why am I bound to stay?

There is still so much out there to achieve

I know

I would give my life just to leave

Wonder why I always long to see

Far and distant places,

When this is home to me

I am well

And I should not complain

But impatience is driving me insane

Woeful heart that never dwells

Happiness will always

Be hidden somewhere else

I must make up my mind

Can I leave this behind?

Nothing left here for me

Will I ever be free?

There is so much out there to see

King Atlas’ daughter, Adalena, has run from the palace in disguise. The outside world is exciting, but dangerous. She has an encounter with three of Jabbadoor’s soldiers, who have just returned home.

THE RAPE

Soldiers

Hey, this rose looks so fine

Standing all alone on such a lovely day

Look, a tasty glass of wine

Just a little sip and I’ll be on my way

A diamond, pure and clean

The finest I’ve ever seen

Adalena

No, let me go.

Soldiers

Darling there’s no need to fight

Don’t make a fuss, and it won’t be so bad

You will stay with us the night

We will be the best, you have ever had

She is a virgin, that’s for sure

But I know the perfect cure

Silvan

Let her be, just let her go

You’re old enogh to know

The girl is far too young to please you

Buy a whore and get her drunk

Take her to your bunk

And for price

She’ll do the things you want her to!

Soldiers

Listen here. It’s plain to see

She can’t handle more than three

Pick your own

She’s not the one and only

This one likes to make a fuss

But it’s nothing new to us

She may fight, but we can tell, she’s lonely

Adalena

Please, help me out, don´t walk away

Silvan

Leave her be, or start to pray

I will have to make sure

You don’t hurt her

You’re too old, it’s time you faced

Nothing’s working below your waist

You don’t even have the strength

To see it through

Soldiers

I don’t have to tell you twice

Should have taken my advice

Can you fight, or are you just a faker?

Do you want to say goodbye?

Do you really want to die?

This is it, prepare to meet your maker

Sounds of fighting

Jabbadoor

What’s this?

What is happening here?

Soldier

This girl came along

We only tried to please her

When this little runt comes

And wants to fight us

Silvan

She begged you to stop it

Soldier

I heard no complaining

Jabbadoor

Be quiet!

Did they hurt you child?

I apologize for any inconvenience

But my men are not so bad they’re only

happy to be back at home again

Silvan

Well, if they’re happy, you can tell them

To be happy with their wives and lovers

Soldier

Now I will shut your pretty face up

Jabbadoor

No! You will be off and report at once

That’s an order – to your commander

And he will make you answer

For what you have done

Silvan and Adalena agree to meet the following day. He runs home and tells his mother Salene, that he is in love. She explains how she met Silvan’s father, Kelvin.

THE MOMENT I MET HIM

Salene

He moved me the moment I met him

He smiled at me gently

Like no one had done

I swore I would never forget him

And deep in my heart

I knew from the start

We were meant to be as one

Oh we had it all when we started

We sat in the meadow

Like lovers would do

He swore we would never be parted

A flower, a smile, and just for a while

I had all my dreams come true

But war was coming to take him away

That night we made love

And I begged him to stay

Together we made our dream come true

The dream that was you

You moved me the moment I saw you

I thought of your father

The things he had said

I knew he would love and adore you

Then out of the blue

The message came through

Said your father was dead

And I was lost, the nights were so long

But you kept smiling

Like nothing was wrong

Until your voice became so clear

So different, yet so near

And I stood for a moment in silence

I held you so close and I listened in awe

The voice of the father you never saw

Spoke to me just like before:

“I’ll be here forever more!”

Princess Adalena and Silvan meet again. They are in love, but the king

has other plans for his daughter.

DISTANT DREAM

Adalena

There’s something

I no longer should conceal

Silvan

Don’t say a word

Just let the moment grow

I’ve chased the distant dream

But you are real

Adalena

But there are things about me

You don’t know

I’m the daughter of the Atlas

Prince Sceptor’s my betrothed

Silvan

You’re what? You’re princess Adalena?

Adalena

Yes, it’s true

Silvan

You’re making fun

Adalena

I wish I were

I raged and in a blur

Ran off, and met with you

Silvan

When looming clouds

Turn day to gloomy night

Silvan & Adalena

A fateful sign is shown us from above

Silvan

The vengeful gods rejoice

In all their might

Silvan & Adalena

But why would they object to our love?

Silvan

‘Cause when I hold you in my arms

I tremble and I know

If this embrace should last

My heart will soar

Silvan & Adalena

And through the clouds

The sun will gleam

If this is just a dream

Adalena

Then let me dream forever more!

It pains me

But I really have to leave now

There’s no room for our love

In father’s scheme

I hope that we’ll forget each other

Somehow

You’re left to chase your distant dream

Silvan

I, who thought that I’d be free

Leaving all behind me

And going off to sea

If I lose you today

I will soon waste away

How my life falls apart

If I can’t win your heart

There is nothing out there to do

Without you

In the harbour inn Silvan meets Jabbadoor’s cunning servant, Zan-Zan,

who invites Silvan along for next day’s Feast of Victory, and reveals

his life’s philosophy:

HEROES WILL HELP YOU

Zan-Zan

My mother sold her body

And my father was a fraud

She was cheap and quite an ugly sight

But all he could affoard

I was more or less the tragic mess

My father left behnd

And he found me by his doorstep

After drinking too much wine

I never saw my father working

But we got along okay

When I asked my father why

He’d take me by the hand and say.

“Heroes will help you

do like me and you’ll be fine

always drink from somebody else’s wine

don’t bring your own

let the other ones pay

‘Cause that’s what I did

and I’ve been okay

Heroes will help you

Just be smiling and polite

Always agree, never be too bright

I’ve had my share of glory

Haven’t had a single worry

Never worked a minute

But I’ve been all right!”

My father died in all his might

And I was left to roam

So rich men’s ugly wives

Would come and take me to their home

It wasn’t always easy

Being pushed and dragged along

But I made a pretty penny

‘Cause I´d charge them by the pound

I hated all these women

Thought my life was kind of cruel

Then I met this brave young soldier

Who was quite a handsome fool

Heroes will help you

He was really quite a sight

Just the kind of man

Who could fight all night

I stood in the crowd

As I hollered HOORAY!

And I followed him ´round nearly every day

Heroes will help you

Suddently I knew the lot

Rich men and generals would kiss my butt

I had my own agenda:

Screw ’em all and live in splendour

Take what you can get

And leave the rest to rot!

One day my friend got married

Oh Poseidon, she was grand

She could turn on any man

And have him eating from her hand

She had quite a little temper

Looking kind of fierce

But her chest could make a man or baby

Want to cry out: CHEERS!

I had to have this woman

But she was playing hard to get

“Mister Exciting” went off fighting

and returned when he was dead he hahaha!

Heroes will help you

They are often off to fight

Leaving all their widows alone at night

I went to her place

Threw some dust in my eye

Fell down on my knees and began to cry

Heroes will help you

“Sweetest man I’ve ever seen”

all I had to do was the old routine

though you’re a sorry boozer

you don’t have to be a loser

listen to a man who’s seen it all

let heroes help you

and you will have a ball

Adalena’s maid, Miranda warns the princess against the perils of love.

FEVER IN YOUR HEART

Miranda

You haven’t heard a word

Of what I’m saying

It just feels like you’re drifting away

The night is closing in, but I’ll be staying

As all the colours turn to grey

You’re burning with a fever

And you tremble

You are cold and falling apart

Yet this feeling is older

Than the oldest temple

This fever burning in your heart

It’s incurable, and often unendurable

It will bring you down, tear you apart

You want me to

Tell you what is wrong with you

I’ve seen it coming from the start

This fever burning in your heart

I had this fever once when I was younger

But I know now, it wasn’t meant to be

I still recall the pain, but I am stronger

Now I can see things differently

That night

I felt the pain of cruel deception

As I fled into the mountains all alone

Once blinded by the taste

Of sweet affection

It leaves you crying on you own

It’s incurable, and often unendurable

It will bring you down right from the start

Your vanity, it will lead you to insanity

Fate will cach you off your guard

And leave this fever in your heart

Don’t listen to your heart

It will decieve you

I have seen so many girls

Brought to their knees

He will promise you the world

And only leave you

This fever, a broken heart’s disease

Miranda/Adalena

It’s incurable, and often unendurable

Leaves you on your own

Behind your facade

You feel the pain

As you very slowly go insane

I’ve seen it coming from the start

This fever coming from the start

This fever burning in your heart

You fall in love and fall apart

After yet another quarrel with his daughter about her arranged marriage, Atlas despairs at his royal powerlessness. He fears Atlantis is doomed because of its many crimes against its own people, and the gods.

ATLAS’ ELEGY

Atlas

Adalena!

Listen to a frightened man

Who is left to wonder

Why his world is torn asunder, I was

Always strong, people knew my name

My fortune and fame

Was I really that blind?

I never knew, when I was led astray

I let you slip away

Now, I’m left without my daughter

Adalena, like Kelvin played his part

I sacrificed your heart

Thinking it was for a higher goal

But in the end I lost my soul

Oh, Atlantis!

We are left to face the truth

With no place to flee to

Our gods will punish he who tampers

With their work

You have grown too strong

It has to go wrong

We have fallen from grace

The gods will see you

Try to take their place

You will have to pay the price

And we will see our days are numbered

Even though I feel remorse

Doesn’t matter, I had to take my course

The course of my life

The course of my life

Returning from a merry night out Zan-Zan proposes to Jabbadoor that

Silvan could become a powerful weapon against Atlas. Conseeda is the drink

of choice in Atlantis.

MISS CONSEEDA

Jabbadoor

Why this moaning and groaning?

You look like you’re back from the dead

You danced with Miss Conseeda

And can’t get her out of your head

Zan-Zan

But I met this bloke in the bar

Who had some kind of crisis

I offered him a drink

And he drank like Dionysus

Jabbadoor

I’m not impressed, Zan-Zan

Zan-Zan

It was he who saved the princess

The day we returned from the war

Jabbadoor

His face is a bit too familiar

I’m sure I’ve seen him before

Zan-Zan

He’s the son of Kelvin.

Jabbadoor

The son of Kelvin?

Zan-Zan

The son of Kelvin!

Jabbadoor

Then we must be alert

He is dangerous

Zan-Zan

However

He is nothing like his dad

He is really not that clever

He may be bold and strong

But as far as I remember

He lost his little heart

And might just lose his temper

Jabbadoor

Do I have to know?

Zan-Zan

Let me tell you the end, before you go

See this girl he fell in love with

Is the sweet and charming Adalena

I shook his hand

And passed the invitation

“the guest of honor”

needed no persuasion

though my head is aching quite severely

I can see it very clearly

Silvan, Adalena: love and sweet romance

There is no escaping

They haven´t got a chance

He is young and in love

I will use the perfect bait

Oh this little affair

Will land his head on my plate

During the feast of Victory Jabbadoor leads his people in singing the

national anthem

HAIL ATLANTIS

Jabbadoor & the People

Poseidon rose in all his might

And turned the darkness into light

Before the time of man

Before the Days began

The wild and roaring waters ran

The winds of wrath began to blow

Across the cold and streaming tide

The Earth was trembling in its woe

With no place left to hide

Then from the waters came

Our land and all her fame

The gods rejoiced and praised her name

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis!

From the mountains to the mighty shore

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis!

You will rule the world forever more

I’ll fight for you on distant shores

We’ll stand behind you as you go

I’ll bring you glory through my wars

We’ll fight every foe

Though mothers weep and cry

We lift our swords up high

For you, we’ll fight until we die

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis

From the mountains to the mighty shore

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis

You will rule the world forever more

This child I bear will be your son

The finest soldier ever seen

He’ll fight in battles to be won

His sword so strong and keen

His life is in your care

So lead him anywhere

He’ll walk through valleys of despair

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis

From the mountains to the mighty shore

Hail Atlantis! Praise Atlantis

You will rule the world forever more

The celebrations begin, and Silvan who is attending the party, sneaks

up on Adalena.

THE RROKENKA

Jabbadoor

After all the battles we’ve won in the East

Let us all rejoice in a glorious feast

Drink conseeda and set your spirits alight

Everybody dance the Rrorenka tonight!

Silvan

Dearest Adalena, come follow the sound

Adalena

Silvan, understand

You’re on dangerous ground

Silvan

Princess, have no fear

Just pay heed to my plea

Come, I beg you

Dance the Rrorenka with me

All

La la la…

Sleazy

I will have the next one

Silvan

Clear out

Adalena

Go away

Bad girl

I am not that easy, so wipe off your foam

Buy me a conseeda

Horny

And then will you play?

Drunkard

Whups, I can’t ssee sstraight now

It’s tsime tso go home…

Silvan

Though the night is perfect

There’s something amiss

Grant me your permission

To give you a kiss

Adalena

What if someone sees us?

Silvan

Well, just look about

Those who aren’t dancing

Have nearly passed out

All

La la la…

Zan-Zan

Look, the two young lovers

They’ve started to kiss

Who, I wonder

Would be offended by this?

Jabbadoor

No more talking!

What are you going to do?

Zan-Zan

Not to worry, master

The game isn’t through

Guard

Soldiers! Seize the young man there

Silvan

Hey! Leave me be

Adalena

If you touch him

I’ll make you wish for your grave

Guard

Pay her no attention, men

Now we shall see

How the mighty Atlas

Will punish this knave

Silvan is thrown in the dungeon but is liberated by Jabbadoor, who suggests that he kill Atlas.

THE MURDER OF ATLAS

Atlas

Who’s there?

Silvan

Now, prepare to meet your maker

Atlas

Kelvin, is that you?

Miranda

I’ll go and getch the guardsmen

Silvan

Do not move

You just stay where you are

Your time has run out

I’m the son of Kelvin

Atlas

Can it be?

Silvan

Do you know who he was?

Atlas

One more child

I have left and abandoned

Who set you free?

Who would overthrow me?

You must tell me, before I am gone

Silvan

I am alone…

Atlas

You disgrace your father, my son

Haonour his name and carry it on

Was it Jabbadoor

Who put you in this false position?

Silvan

That may be so, but I ask you to tell me

Tell me, before it’s too late

I want to know my father’s fate

Atlas

Kelvin was strong

The finest soldier in the nation

Known by his men to be just

He kept his word

Never fell into temptation

There was but one he would trust

But he wouldn’t abide

Stood by his side

And when Kelvin died

He took command, leading us into battle

Told us that Kelvin was killed by the foe

I could hardly believe what I saw

The wound in his back told me…

Atlas and Silvan

He was killed by Jabbadoor

Jabbadoor

Atlas, I see that your life is in danger

Allow me to fight for your life

Silvan, prepare to die

Atlas

Stop, Jabbadoor

He is innocent!

I know who the guilty one is

Jabbadoor

In that case…

(Jabbadoor slits Atlas’ throat!)

You didn’t stick to the plan, boy

You failed me and now you will pay

Kill the regicide!!

Jabbadoor kills the king but puts the blame on Silvan, who has to run for his life.

THE ESCAPE

Adalena

No! What is going on?

Talk to me please!

Jabbadoor

Oh my dear, he killed your father

Silvan spoke of love so tender

Spoke of love, but wore a knife

Only thing on his agenda

Was to take your father’s life

Adalena

No, my heart could not deceive me

Why do all my loved ones die?

Not my Silvan…

Jabbadoor

Please believe me

He was here, I wouldn’t lie

Adalena

No, it can’t be true, you must be lying

They just locked him up

He’s not the one

Jabbadoor

Adalena please, it’s no use crying

You will have to face what he has done

Guardsmen!

Take our princess back to her chambers

Zan-Zan

Jabbadoor I told you

All we had to do was wait

Just as I had thought

He’s the perfect bait

Jabbadoor

You are right, Zan-Zan

Zan-Zan

And the mistress?

We don’t need a living witness

Jabbadoor

You let her be now, just set her free now

I think she knows

Her life belongs to me now

Let us focus on Silvan

He’s a boy in distress

Now he is running back home

To his mother, I guess

The people

Go find Silvan! Get Silvan!

He killed Atlas…

Now he’s out there running away

But tonight he will have to pay

He was always teasing us

I have always known that he’d get in

Trouble – somehow, someday!

Go find Silvan! Get Silvan!

He killed Atlas…

Now he’s out there running away

But tonight he will have to pay

Silvan

He killed Atlas, and I saw it

Salene

What…Who…What do you mean?

Silvan

Jabbadoor! He never even waited

I should have been the one but hesitated

Salene

You won’t have to flee

Don’t run away

You can hide here with me

Silvan

I must leave this world behind me

If I stay with you

I know they’re bound to find me

Salene

I’ll do what must be done

I have lost your father, I won’t lose a son

So hide in the crypt

Only I know it’s there

I know they’ll be rough

But I don’t really care

Silvan

But mother…

Salene

And when they are gone

You can go anywhere

Adalena

Oh Miranda!

Miranda

My Princess…

Adalena

I have no one to turn to…

Is it true? Is Silvan really the one

If he’s innocent, tell me so!

Miranda

I haven’t the answers, I’d rather be gone

Adalena

You must tell me the truth

Now I have to know

Miranda

He took your father’s life!

Adalena

That’s all you have to say?

Miranda

I can’t help you girl

I must be on my way

I obey his command

I must follow his voice

With no home and no family

I don’t have a choice

I need a man to keep me strong

And I can’t be too concerned

With what is right or wrong

Such is my destiny…

The people

Go find Silvan! Get Silvan!

He killed Atlas…

Now he’s out there running away

But tonight he will have to pay

Jabbadoor

Well, my friend, just lead the way

Salene

You won’t find him here

Jabbadoor

Come on, dear

You can show me the boy

Or start praying

I think that you know what I’m saying

Salene

He went North, he ran away

Jabbadoor

If you’re lying, there’ll be hell to pay

Just to make sure

That nothing goes wrong

You’re coming with me

And he’ll be along

Salene

You will never bring him down

Jabbadoor

I got Kelvin!

Salene

You will never bring him down

Jabbadoor

He fought just like a lion…

Salene

He will face you and he’ll fight

Jabbadoor

But he died a sorry sight

Let’s go!

Salene

No, you will never bring him down

Jabbadoor

Just a matter of time

Salene

I would give him my life

Jabbadoor

That can be arranged

Salene

He will face you and he’ll win!

Jabbadoor

You will never see him!

Salene

He will…

Jabbadoor

Never

Salene

Beat you!

You won’t

Jabbadoor

See him

Salene

Beat him!

Jabbadoor & Salene

His/your time has run out

The people

Go find Silvan! Go get Silvan!

Go find Silvan! Go get Silvan!

Go find Silvan! Go get Silvan!
