This show is more of a revue than a plot musical, so the songs don't necessarily connect to each other in any way - each one is a story in and of itself. The songs are loosely linked by themes such as arrival and departure, seminal experiences and life choices, using New York through the ages as a backdrop. As such, I can't really offer much of a synopsis, but reading through the lyrics will help you see what's going on.

This is a show without any source material - there's not really a story, so it's not based on anything! :-) Amazingly enough, it marked Jason Robert Brown's off-Broadway debut, at the very young age of 25. Read more about the development of the musical.

The only recording of this show so far is the original cast recording, which is a great introduction! Read my review of the CD, or listen to a clip from one of my favourite songs.

I've only seen a concert version of this show, but because of the nature of it, I don't think we were really missing anything! Plus, it featured the original Toronto cast, who were amazing. Read more about that experience.

The cast album for this show included some great performers, and hearing them tackle this material just increased my appreciation for them.
