E.L. Doctorow's novel has been popular since it was published in 1975, and was made into a movie before it became a musical. It is not so much a narrative as it is a portrait of the times and a glimpse into the lives of many characters, both real and imaginary. I actually delayed seeing this show for a long time, since I didn't really think I was going to enjoy it. Turned out I was wrong. :-) I've seen it four times now, and would love to see it again! Read more about my experiences with the show.
